Here, I’m going to discuss the 4 most commonly used tenses in academic writing. In the TOEFL exam you will write a short essay in an academic style, so it’s quite important to know which tenses are used by university students. Surprisingly enough, not all of the known and learnt ones. You have probably been taught that there are 16 different tenses in English. In order to make it clear, that’s not necessarily true. In fact, there are 2 tenses and a few aspects of them. There is present and past tense. And there is simple, progressive and perfect aspect. Future is expressed by a modal verb “will” or other tenses, like present continuous. So which tenses are most often used and needed in an academic essay?

Let me give you some tips to self-study the vocabulary for the TOEFL test:
Associations always help remember. Work regularly and the effects will be visible very quickly. Calendar.
Use a calendar for vocabulary revision. Note down your vocabulary in a calendar every day. Spend at least one day a week to revise the vocabulary of a given week. Keep checking these notes as often as you can. And use it in practice, in conversations or essays you write. Instead of a traditional calendar, you can use applications dedicated to learning vocabulary, such as: quizlet.com, fiszkoteka.pl. These applications allow you to create your own sets and are free of charge. Do you have your own ideas for learning vocabulary, share them with us. Write a comment or email to me, what helps you best to remember the vocabulary. |
